What to expect from a middleware stack on an AV

27 Oct 2026
Day 1 PM - The Foundations
I want to give an overview of the kind of on-vehicle communication use cases we see in General Motors. GM took the route of writing its own middleware stack for its Autonomous Vehicle use cases. This is now open source (https://github.com/dallison/subspace). In this presentation, I would like to go over some of the use cases that are important to an Autonomous Vehicle, and why having a minimal, yet powerful middleware stack is important for performance but also safety.
  • What are the important communication use cases on an AV
  • What makes a middleware efficient, and how this works in harmony with functional safety
  • How do our stack solutions compare with others
  • Can others use this stack
  • What are the biggest learnings from our experience
