OTA Updates: Rewriting the rules of electrical reliability

Electrical reliability in modern vehicles has traditionally meant designing for the absence of failure — and reacting with recalls when that design assumption breaks. This presentation argues that over-the-air updates are rewriting that model entirely: low-voltage electronics and ECU faults affecting autonomous vehicle systems can increasingly be mitigated and contained through firmware updates instead of physical recalls. The presenter explores the general considerations that separate a hardware-bound fault from one that can be addressed in software, the validation challenges that come with software-based containment, and how OTA is shifting field reliability from a slow, recall-driven process to a faster, more scalable solution.
