Day 2 PM Technical Considerations and Scaling
Recent years have witnessed growth in emerging automotive technologies ranging from advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to automated vehicles (AVs), with the goal of reducing traffic-related fatalities. Safety cases have become commonplace fixtures for describing the rationale behind an AV developer’s development and deployment approach, with a focus on the operational design domain (ODD) to contextualize the operating conditions. As AV deployments expand, there is a continuing need to align the safety case and development approach with specific deployments. A concept of operations, or ConOps, can provide a way to complement the ODD by systematically and transparently defining application intent and organizational workflows that can then be used to drive deployment-specific safety cases and product development. The ConOps can also be used to inform relevant stakeholders, including regulators, the public and independent assessors, about a developer’s intended operations and safety case.
